1. Quick Status & Standard Indian Market Timings
Financial planning in India requires coordinating between RBI bank closures, NSE/BSE equity trading windows, and T+1 clearing cycles. Missing a cut-off time can delay vendor payments, trigger cheque bounces, or leave open trading positions unhedged.
Pre-open session: 9:00 AM – 9:08 AM (Monday to Friday).
Evening session open on most selective bank holidays.
Always active even on national bank holidays and Sundays.

3. Trading Holidays vs Clearing & Settlement Holidays
A common point of confusion for traders is the difference between a Trading Holiday and a Clearing Holiday:
Trading Holiday (Market Closed)
On official Trading Holidays, order matching engines on NSE and BSE are completely stopped. You cannot buy, sell, or place market or limit orders in Equity, Equity Derivatives, or Currency Derivatives.
Clearing Holiday (Trading Open, Settlement Postponed)
On Clearing Holidays (e.g. Annual Bank Closing on April 1), stock trading is completely active, but clearing corporations and commercial banks cannot settle funds or securities. Trades executed on that day are settled on the next working settlement day under India's T+1 settlement cycle.
4. The 2nd and 4th Saturday Banking Rules
Under the bilateral agreement between the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) and the Reserve Bank of India, commercial bank branches operate under a strict Saturday rotation:
The 2nd Saturday and 4th Saturday of every calendar month are statutory bank holidays.
The 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturday (when a month has 5 Saturdays) are normal full-day operating hours.
5. Which Banking Services Work on Bank Holidays?
UPI, IMPS, 24x7 NEFT/RTGS, Net Banking, Mobile Banking Apps, ATM cash withdrawals, and Debit/Credit Card POS transactions are completely uninterrupted on bank holidays, national festivals, and Sundays.
Physical branch cash deposits/withdrawals, physical DD/Pay Order issuance, locker access, loan documentation, and Cheque Truncation System (CTS) inter-bank cheque clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are banks closed on all Saturdays in India?▸
Under RBI guidelines, all public and private commercial banks are closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every calendar month. On the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturday (when applicable), banks operate with normal full-day banking hours.
What is the difference between a Trading Holiday and a Clearing/Settlement Holiday?▸
On a Trading Holiday, the stock exchanges (NSE and BSE) are completely shut, and no orders can be placed. On a Clearing/Settlement Holiday, trading is open, but commercial banks or depositories are shut; trades executed on such days are settled on the subsequent business day under the T+1 settlement cycle.
Do UPI, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS work on bank holidays?▸
Yes. Digital payment channels including UPI, IMPS, and 24x7 NEFT/RTGS operate continuously 365 days a year without interruption, even on national bank holidays and Sundays. Cheque clearing through Cheque Truncation System (CTS) is halted on bank holidays.
What is Muhurat Trading?▸
Muhurat Trading is a special 1-hour festive trading session held every year on Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) evening. Indian exchanges remain officially closed during the morning, but open for 60 minutes at an auspicious astrological time for symbolic token investments.
