Step-by-Step Standard Operating Procedure: Withdrawing Cash via UPI ATM
The Interoperable Cardless Cash Withdrawal (ICCW) feature operates consistently across all participating public and private sector banks as well as White-Label ATM (WLA) networks. Follow these 5 steps at any compatible ATM:
Select UPI Cash on Screen
Walk up to the ATM and tap the UPI Cash Withdrawal or ICCW Cardless Cash button displayed on the main welcome touch screen.
Enter Desired Amount
Type the withdrawal amount in multiples of ₹100 or ₹500 (up to the ₹10,000 maximum per transaction cap) and press Proceed.
Scan Dynamic QR Code
A dynamic single-use QR code will appear on the ATM screen with a 60-second countdown timer. Open any UPI app on your phone and scan the code.
Authorize with UPI PIN
Confirm the amount and bank account on your phone screen, enter your confidential 4-digit or 6-digit UPI PIN, and tap Submit.
Collect Cash & Receipt
The ATM cash dispenser activates instantly, disbursing fresh currency notes along with an optional digital or paper transaction slip.
Zero Plastic Exposure
No card trapped in the machine, no damaged chips, and zero possibility of shoulder-surfing cameras reading your physical PIN entry.

The Cyber Defense Architecture: Why UPI ATM Neutralizes Card Skimming
Card skimming has long been the primary attack vector against ATM users worldwide. Fraudsters affix ultra-thin magnetic stripe reading shrouds over the card acceptance throat and install micro-pinhole cameras to capture the victim's four-digit keypad entry. Once cloned, counterfeit magnetic stripe cards can drain accounts in overseas unprotected terminals.
The UPI ICCW architecture permanently closes this attack surface:
- No Magnetic Stripe / EMV Interaction: The customer never inserts or swipes a plastic card. Physical skimming devices receive zero data.
- Dynamic Single-Use Ephemeral QR Codes: Each QR code generated on the ATM screen is bound to a single transaction identifier, timestamped with a 60 to 120-second lifespan. Even if a bystander photographically captures the QR code, it becomes instantly invalid once used or timed out.
- Encrypted In-Hand Authentication: The customer's secret PIN is keyed into their private mobile operating system (iOS or Android Secure Enclave), never touching the physical ATM chassis. Physical keypad overlay sniffers are rendered entirely obsolete.
Handling Failed UPI ATM Transactions: RBI Turnaround Time (TAT) Rules
Occasional hardware jams, power flickers, or communication timeouts can result in an account debit without cash dispensing. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has instituted strict statutory protections under Circular DPSS.CO.PD.No.1842/02.12.004/2018-19:
# RBI Statutory Turnaround Time & Compensation Mandate:
• Permissible Reversal Window (TAT): T + 1 business day (where T is the transaction date).
• Statutory Compensation for Delay: If the bank fails to credit the debited amount within T + 5 calendar days, the bank must automatically credit compensation of ₹100 per day for every day of delay directly into the customer's account without requiring a claim petition.
If a failure occurs, immediately take a photo of the ATM screen error message, retain the SMS notification containing the 12-digit UPI Reference Number (RRN), and register a complaint through your bank's mobile app or the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) dispute management portal.
